Over expression of BIM gene in Multiple Sclerosis patients using Real time PCR

Background & Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disorder of the central nervous system that results in the destruction of the myelin sheath. Recent studies indicate that the immune system and factors related to its regulation play an important role in the incidence of central nervous disease such as MS. According to the recent findings, the BIM gene plays a key role in biological activities of cell such as apoptosis. This gene is an important candidate for this disease. Therefore, the current study was carried out to investigate the association between the BIM gene expression and returnee-remitting multiple sclerosis among Iranian population.
Materials & Methods: In this case-control study, samples were collected from of patients admitted to Sina hospital in Tehran. 50 patients with returnee-remitting multiple sclerosis aged 20 to 45 years and 10 healthy individuals were admitted to Sina Hospital, Tehran in 2015. Their BIM gene expression was evaluated using Real- Time PCR and was compared with that of the control group.
Results: The results revealed that the BIM gene expression was significantly higher in patients with returnee-remitting multiple sclerosis compared to those in the control group (P< 0.03).
Conclusion: Gene expression decreased in MS patients compared to healthy individuals. Since the BIM gene plays a key role in the regulation of vital activity of human cells and its association with MS disease, therefore, this gene can be introduced as a biomarker for early detection of individuals susceptible to MS.
